Day 4

Service

The Bible is filled with teachings about service.  In fact, the life of Jesus was a living example of what it means to serve others.  However, what does it mean for us to serve in the workplace? When society suggests that we should consider our own interests above all, and places strong emphasis on individuality, how do we make room for service?

First, it is important to understand that we are all called to serve. Regardless of who you are, where you are from, or your socio-economic status, there is opportunity for service all around you. Second, we should also consider our motives. We find many stories of Jesus asking people about the true motives in their hearts. For example, Matt 6:21 and Luke 12:34, state: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” While there are many lessons found in this passage of scripture, one key lesson is the importance of our motives. Third, we should serve others with love and not out of obligation. In Galatians 5:13, Jesus is calling men and women alike to serve one another humbly in love.

When we consider what it means to truly serve others, we find opportunities all around us, especially at work. As you go about your daily lives at work, and in your personal interactions with others, be intentional about serving others in ways that honor God.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Galatians 5:13
